President's and College Teaching Awards Applicant FAQs

Q.   What is the main difference between the two awards?

A.    The College Teaching Awards support academics who are currently developing a repertoire in teaching and learning as part of their academic careers. The President’s Teaching Award recognises academics who have already a significant track record in teaching and learning achievement and academic leadership at school, programme and/or college level.

Q. Can I apply for both awards?

A. While you can apply for both award schemes, the criteria for the President’s Teaching Award are considerably more advanced than that for the College Teaching Awards.  An individual applicant cannot be awarded both a College and the President’s Award in the same year.

Q. I have been awarded a Fellowship in Teaching and Academic Development. Am I eligible to apply to apply for these awards?

A. Past or present Fellows in Teaching and Academic Development may apply for both awards.

Q. Can teaching support staff (librarians, lab technicians, e-learning technologists, adult education, educational developers etc) apply for these awards?

A. No. The College Teaching Awards and the President’s Teaching Awards are specifically for academic staff based in schools who teach undergraduate and/or graduate students as a substantive part of their work and who engage in school and programme curriculum design, student support and other teaching and learning focused administrative activities in their School.  The ASSL Awards recognise the achievement of other individuals who do not fall into this catergory. Q. What is the difference between the rewards offered by both award schemes?

A.  The College Teaching Awards rewards successful applicants with a €1000 travel bursary to attend a T&L conference/event. The President’s Teaching Award winners undertake an agreed project in teaching and learning along with a €5000 bursary to support the project.  There is no reduction in workload for either scheme.
