This module was designed and implemented in response to a clear need amongst undergraduate sport and exercise management students to learn during their first semester the range of academic skills (writing, reading, study etc) needed to succeed in higher education. The module support grant provided necessary supports i.e. research assistance to design, administer and analyse pre, midpoint and post surveys, to determine whether the module succeeded in its chief learning outcome of better managing their university learning.
The module was substantially redeveloped and reconfigured to enhance first year experience and facilitate the transition to third level learning. Varied assessment strategies were used. The key input funded by the grant was that of training tutors in the skills and methods of Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) so that they could then practice these with confidence in the classroom.
The grant funded a software upgrade to the quiz functionality of an E-Learning component and some support services. While some of this could have been achieved with other content in Blackboard, it could not have been so seamlessly integrated with virtual microscopy without the software upgrade. The learning by doing/discovering and the use of timely feedback facilitated by the grant, has been shown to be critical in blended learning.
