New Resource: ‘A Practitioner’s Guide to Choice of Assessment Methods with a Module’
As part of the Choice of Assessment Methods within a Module project, over a two year period academic staff across seven schools designed and implemented student assessment choice in a variety of modules across UCD. Research was then carried out to examine the outcomes and experiences of the staff and students involved. The research demonstrated that UCD students responded positively to this approach as it empowered them and allowed them to play to their strengths. In the first three modules evaluated, students strongly agreed with the statement
“I appreciated being given a choice of assessment methods”
Furthermore it gave staff the opportunity to use different assessments to cater for students with a variety of learning styles and experiences. Staff also responded positivity emphasising the need for careful planning and an emphasis on equity. As an outcome of the project ‘ A Practitioner’s Guide to Choice of Assessment Methods’ , edited by Dr Geraldine O’Neill was developed. This Guide gives details on the implementation and evaluation of assessment choice in a module in these seven UCD case studies and gives advice to staff on how to set up an equitable choice. The project was supported by HEA Training of Trainers’ funding.
