Dr Patricia Kieran, Senior Lecturer in the UCD School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering, has been awarded a 2009 ExxonMobil Excellence in Teaching Award. The Award carries a prize of £10,000; in addition, the School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering will avail of further ExxonMobil support, to an in-kind value of £40,000, including priority for graduate recruitment and undergraduate industrial placements as well as access to case study materials. The Award scheme, administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) is open to academic staff from all Engineering disciplines, based in higher education institutions throughout the UK and Ireland. Dr Kieran was the only Irish recipient for 2009. Award winners are identified on the basis of a strong and continuing commitment to teaching, efforts in promoting the discipline and the cultivation of strong links between academia and industry. Dr Kieran, also a UCD Fellow in Teaching & Academic Development, was particularly commended for innovation in teaching, with the introduction of Problem-Based Learning and Peer-Assisted Learning to the Chemical Engineering curriculum.

Applications for the 2010 ExxonMobil Excellence in Teaching Awards are now invited. Academic staff from all Engineering disciplines may be eligble. Full details are available at www.raeng.org.uk/exxonmobil
