Flip Camcorders – a Teaching and Learning Venture 17.02.11

A popular high definition video device used by the University of Brighton and others, Flip camcorders are currently on trial with UCD Teaching and Learning as part of an NDLR initiative. The intention of the trial is to enable lecturers and students to engage with their learning in an active and participative manner: to use video to demonstrate, instruct or assess.

The Flip is very portable and easy to use. Once video footage has been captured (the available 8GB models will allow for two hours of video) the Flip has a built in USB connector that allows it to be connected directly to a computer for file transfers. Its self-contained software enables basic editing, processing and automatic sharing.

How would a lecturer use it in teaching?

Video can be used to:

·         Display difficult to visualise or complex practices within laboratory or real world settings

·         Capture processes that required repeated or iterative derivations or to document procedures

·         Represent assessment, by reflective journals, fieldwork notebooks, case studies, interviews

If you are interested in taking a set of 10 to try for two weeks over the field work period please email: teachingandlearning@ucd.ie
