Using Flip Cameras teaching_flip_elearning

What is a Flip Camera?

A Flip camera is a small handheld High Definition video device. It is simple to use, all you need to do is point and click to take video footage. They can capture 1-2 hours of video.

What does it do?

Once you have captured your video (the available 8GB models will allow for two hours of video) the Flip has a built in USB connector that allows it to be connected directly to a computer for file transfers. Its self-contained software enables basic editing, processing and automatic sharing.

Where do I get access and or /support?

With the aid of NDLR support, UCD Teaching and Learning has acquired two sets of cameras for use.

Visit http://www.ucd.ie/itservices/teachinglearningit/ for further information regarding available tools and supported services.

For further information go to the UCD NDLR Learning Innovation Project grant scheme page.

If you would like to use one of the two sets of cameras please contact teachingandlearning@ucd.ie with your request.

How do I use it in my teaching?

The intention of the NDLR Flip initiative is to enable lecturers and students to engage with their learning in an active and participative manner,  to use video to:

  • demonstrate, instruct or assess
  • display difficult to visualise or complex practices within laboratory or real world settings.
  • capture processes that required repeated or iterative derivations or to document procedures.
  • represent assessment, by reflective journals, fieldwork notebooks, case studies, interviews etc.
