Using Wikis

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a collaborative space to share ideas and learn collectively.

What does it do?

It enables users to contribute to a ‘live’ web page. In this way the page is an evolving document charting the path of knowledge construction. Each iteration is and individual contribution is logged providing a transparent record of the material development.

Where do I get access and or /support?

IT Services virtual learning environment Blackboard contains a wiki tool.

Visit http://www.ucd.ie/itservices/teachinglearningit/  for further information regarding available tools and supported services

Visit http://www.blackboard.com/quicktutorials/quicktutorials.htm  for video tutorials and support information on a range of Blackboard products (please note not all products are supported by the current UCD installation)

Visit http://www.learningobjects.com/  for video tutorials and support information on its range of Blackboard products.

An alternative product is Wikimedia.

How do I use it in my teaching?

The wiki is an excellent tool to promote collaboration. Used as a means to capture, chart and present a group project; individual users may contribute data, images, comments etc as they build their wiki to fulfil the project goals.

Students can be invited to review and assess entries on existing wiki's (such as Wikipedia) to aid them in developing their critical understanding of information literacy. By engaging in this activity they are able to demonstrate the validity or otherwise of these resources.
