Appointed to review group
on auditing

audit.jpg (7902 bytes)Professor Niamh Brennan of the Graduate School of Business has been appointed to the Review Group on Auditing, established by the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, in response to recommendations of the DIRT Inquiry Report. The group is to examine the issue of self-regulation in the auditing profession.

Professor Brennan is the Michael McCormack Professor of Management and is a chartered accountant. Before joining UCD she worked as an auditor in Stokes Kennedy Crowley & Co (now KPMG).


KARL COURTNEY

We have learned with regret of the death of Karl Courtney, aged 20, who was a third year science student. Our sincere condolences to his mother Anne; his sisters Joanne, Emma-Jane and brothers, Donagh and Killian.


Reception marks L & H success

Portrait of writer presented

A portrait of writer Brian Ó Nualláin (Flann O’Brien/ Myles na Gopaleen) has been presented to UCD by the poet, Seamus Heaney. It was drawn by Micheál Ó Nualláin, the writer’s brother, in 1957 as a case study for a life-size portrait in oils. Pictured are Seamus Heaney; the President, Dr Cosgrove, and Micheál Ó Nualláin.


Honour from Spain

foley.jpg (33458 bytes)A retired senior lecturer in the Department of Spanish has been awarded the Cruz de la Orden de Isable la Católica for her lifelong contribution to the diffusion of Spanish language and culture.

Maribel is pictured above with the ambassador.

Maribel Butler de Foley was a member of the department from 1956 to 1991 and translated many works in English into Spanish prior to her retirement. Among them were works by Irish writers George Moore, James Joyce, Sean Ó Faolain, Frank O’Connor, John Millington Synge, Kate O’Brien, Brian Friel, William Trevor, Colm Toibin, Patrick McCabe, John Banville and Keith Ridgeway.

The presentation of the decoration was made by the Spanish ambassador, HE Don José María Sanz-Pastor, on behalf of King Juan Carlos, in the Spanish Embassy. The President, Dr Cosgrove, and his wife Emer attended the ceremony.
