Between November 1997 and February 1998 the Faculty of Commerce ran a communications competition aimed at First Year undergraduate students of the faculty. It sought to identify highly-motivated, well-rounded students determined to make the
best use of opportunities offered to them in the faculty. The competition comprised a 2,000-word essay Education and Vocational Training: Irreconcilable goals of the University?, followed by an interview for short-listed participants. Financial awards sponsored by the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business were presented by Professor Philip Bourke. Main prizewinners were Nessa Gately (BComm programme), Gareth Kinsella (BBLS programme) and Joanne Roche (BAFS programme). Runners-up were Maria Hayes and Patrick Smyth (BBLS programme), Patricia McGrath and Jamie Renehan (BComm programme) and Killian Tracey (BAFS programme).
