Ireland's foremost playwright, Brian Friel, has taken up a position as Senior Fellow in the Department of English.

The honorary position is designed to recognise the unique contribution of an individual to a particular discipline, art form or field of study. The dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Fergus D'Arcy, said the playwright had used his skills to help Irish people to better know themselves and their culture, and by now such understanding seems inseparable from his explorations of the culture. "Dr Friel is also an artist of international reputation," he added. "His work means as much in Tallinn as in Tralee, and Translations itself has been translated into a great many languages, from Japanese to Estonian."

Brian Friel was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in 1983.
