A special edition of the Irish Journal of Psychology aimed at professionals working with sex offenders has been published. Entitled Understanding, Assessing and Treating Juvenile and Adult Sex Offenders, the publication was launched at the University Industry Centre in April.

In a lecture to mark the event, Professor William Marshall from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, spoke on The Effectiveness of the Psychological Treatment of Sex Offenders. He said that such treatment ultimately protects children from sexual abuse and that a commitment to the continued development of such programmes in Ireland would result in savings for taxpayers in the long term.

Professor Ciaran Benson, head of the Department of Psychology, speaking at the launch, said his department is committed to supporting research on effective approaches to such treatment.

The publication contains specially commissioned articles from practitioners and researchers working around the world and has been produced in conjunction with the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform; the North Eastern Health Board; and the Clinical Division of the Psychological Society of Ireland.
