The Third and final lecture in the Jean Monnet Lecture Series was held in the University Industry Centre on 2 December, on the subject The Intergovernmental Conference and the Governance of Europe. It was given by Professor Brigid Laffan, the Jean Monnet Professor of European Politics.

Professor Rodney Thom, Jean Monnet Professor of Economics; Dr Fergus D'Arcy, dean of the Faculty of Arts; T D Kingston, managing director, Irish Life; Professor Brigid Laffan, Jean Monnet Professor of European Politics; the President, Dr Cosgrove; and Professor Albert Lovett, Jean Monnet Professor of History.

The lectures were intended as a contribution to the public debate in Ireland on the future of the European Union and Ireland's place in it, on the occasion of the Irish presidency of the EU.

The previous lectures were European Integration 1945-1957: An Insider's View, given by Professor Albert Lovett, Jean Monnet Professor of History; and Economics and Monetary Union, given by Professor Rodney Thom, Jean Monnet Professor of Economics.

The Jean Monnet Chairs were established in various universities in 1990 by the European Commission, with the aim of promoting teaching and research on European integration. They were named in honour of one of the founding fathers of the European Coal and Syeel Community, who was a lifelong advocate of closer cooperation between the governments and peoples of Europe.

There are four Jean Monnet Chairs in the Faculty of Arts at UCD, in politics, economics, history and information systems.
