French philosopher and writer Jacques Derrida delivered a two-part lecture at UCD on 13/14 February, under the title The History of the Lie: State of the Lie, Lie of State, as the 1997 Agnes Cuming Lecture in Philosophy.

One of the most influential philosophers of these times, Professor Derrida is known as the 'Father of Deconstruction' and is the author of more than 30 books and hundreds of articles, and has held positions at the Ecole Normale Superieure, University of California, Irvine and Yale. He is currently director of Studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Pictured at the lecture are Mark Dooley, Faculty of Arts Fellow; Professor Jacques Derrida; and Professor Richard Kearney, head of the Department of Philosophy.
