UCD student to pioneer BA International
degree in Syria

Ruth Ní Fhionnáin has been accepted as a visiting student into the French Institute of Arab Studies (IFEAD) at Damascus, for the academic year 2002-3.

She travelled in the Middle East during last summer and attended courses in Cairo and at the Institute in Damascus. Next September she will go back to IFEAD for the full academic year, to study Arab language, literature and culture.

"The variety of courses on offer will introduce me to new aspects of Arabic culture, such as modern day politics, and allow me to pursue my interest in modern Arabic literature," says Ruth, a second year student of Italian and Arabic. IFEAD was founded in 1922 as a teaching and research centre for Arabic Studies covering the areas of Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon.
