Cyberspace lecture is published
|
|
The
Faculty of Arts marked the filling of the Chair of Library and
Information Studies by the publication of an Inaugural Lecture by
Professor Mary Burke. The lecture entitled Challenges of
Cyberspace was delivered at UCD on 23 April 1998. Professor
Burke is the second holder of this Professorship which dates back
to 1977 when Professor John Dean became the foundation professor.
In
setting up his new department, Professor Dean secured Dr Mary
Burke as its first permanent lecturer. Dr Burke had secured her BSc
and her PhD in Chemistry from UCD and at the same time was
developing a parallel professional and academic interest in the
field of Information Studies. In 1993 she succeeded John
Dean as the Head of the Department and later became only the second
holder of the Chair of Library and Information Studies in
succession to him. As Head and Professor she was responsible for introducing
Information Studies as a major Humanities subject in the Faculty
of Arts. The publication has a foreword by Professor Fergus
D’Arcy, dean, Faculty of Arts. The lecture is also printed in
Irish in the same booklet.
