Dr Michael Timms has been appointed Academic Director at the
Centre for Disability Studies.
He graduated from UCD in 1970 with a Master of Science and
Doctor of Philosophy.
During his 20 years with the Eastern Health Board he was
involved in the move of services to the community and led a number of outreach initiatives with general
practitioners and teachers. He was also involved in the management of community-based
hostels for people with mental health difficulties.
He has taken over the roles of Academic Director on the Higher
Diploma courses run by the Centre.
President’s Research
and Fellowship Awards
Twenty-eight members of staff were presented with Awards worth a total of
246,947 and eight Fellowships worth 252,000 were allocated in the President's
Research and Fellowship Awards 2002/2003.

Inaugural lecture

An Inaugural Lecture entitled Difficult Citizenship: Pierre Elliot
Trudeau and the politics of recognition in Canada was given by Dr Linda Cardinal, Craig Dobbin
Professor of Canadian Studies.
The Lecture took place in the University Industry Centre on 29
May.
Midwifery Graduates conferred

Alumni officers meet

The six-monthly meeting of alumni officers from universities and
other third level colleges throughout the 32 counties was hosted in UCD in
March.
Topics discussed included the establishment of
a relationship with undergraduates, getting individual faculties involved with alumni
programmes and development, and conducting graduate research.

Recent retirements

Irene Dixon has retired from the Medical Faculty following 35 years

A book entitled Footbridge Towards the Other by Fr John
