Dominic Martella joined University College Dublin as External Communications and Media Relations Manager in 2005.

He is responsible for building a strong public profile for the university, and for enhancing its reputation among its stakeholders through strategic communications programmes.

He provides academics and scientists with the training, tools and techniques required to explain their knowledge, research, and discoveries to audiences beyond their peers; to policy makers, opinion leaders, and the wider public, through a range of communications channels – primarily the mass media and online.

He also proactively links national and international media with academics and scientists who can provide expert commentary and opinion on breaking news and issues of public interest.

His responsibilities also include the external communications and media relations component of major university awards, announcements and events, and visits by heads of state, heads of government, government ministers, and high-profile public figures.

He is a member of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII), the Chartered Institute of Public Relations UK (Global Affiliate), and the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (Euprera).

He has an MA in social anthropology, a GDip in advertising, and a BA in social anthropology, geography and classics.

Before joining University College Dublin, Dominic Martella spent several years as a Freelance Publicist; three years as Publicity and Promotions Officer for the National Distance Education Centre at Dublin City University; two years as Projects Officer (Public Relations) for the Irish Secretariat of the United Nations (UN) International Year of Older Persons 1999; and a year as Projects Officer (Public Relations) for Wicklow County Council (Ireland) with special responsibility for Le Tour de France and the 1798 Bicentennial Commemorations.
