How exposure of the patient to x-radiation can be safely controlled when producing radiographs.

The chemical restraint of the animal should be a routine in order to minimise manual restraint.

Avoid the occurrence of retakes. This is one of the best ways to minimise radiation exposure.

Always be conscious of the radiation risk to the foetus and the gonads of breeding animals. Shielding of the gonads of breeding animals is possible and recommended. Shielding is usually in the form of lead shields.
