On the 29th November 2012, staff and students of the University College Dublin Veterinary Medicine School and Hospital will be hosting their 33rd Annual Carol Service, in aid of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. This event is a longstanding tradition within the Veterinary School built around our commitment to help where we can and is an open event. For those who cannot attend the event, it will also be streamed live via an official UCD web-link. This event is the perfect way start the run up to Christmas and also support an incredible organisation.

The inaugural White Coat Ceremony for fourth year students of UCD’s School of Veterinary Medicine was held on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at Astra Hall. Eleven committee members from the Class of 2013 worked tirelessly throughout the past year to create this new annual tradition for the veterinary college. The White Coat Ceremony distinguishes the progression from formal classroom education to full-time clinical training with a primary focus on patient care within the UCD Veterinary Hospital under the guidance of clinical specialists.

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) International Award for Service to the Profession was recently given to Professor Boyd Jones, who was the Professor of Small Animal Clincial Studies and Dean of the Veterinary Faculty at UCD from 2002 - 2007. The WSAVA presented its annual Awards and its inaugural One Health Award at the World Congress in Jeju, Korea, in October. Highly regarded in global companion animal care, the WSAVA Awards recognise ground-breaking research and achievement in the clinical care of companion animals.

Veterinary pathologists in the Diagnostic Services at UCD School of Veterinary Medicine have issued a timely warning to the veterinary profession, cat owners and the general public who are involved in car maintenance, that in recent years there has been a re-emergence of deaths in individual,l and groups of ,cats due to ethylene glycol poisoning. Ethylene Glycol is a major component of Anti-Freeze used particularly in car radiators.

2011 has been designated as "World Veterinary Year" to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the first veterinary school. UCD carried out its own celebration in the first week of October, exposing students to the breadth of veterinary medicine. UCD's World Veterinary Week brought in speakers from Dublin, Brussels, and the United States who discussed topics ranging from pet obesity to EU veterinary legislation. A photo competition exploring "Vets in our daily lives" and veterinary post mortem exams available for medical students to observe made the week very successful!

UCD's Veterinary Medicine Programme is now one of only five veterinary schools currently accredited by the AVMA in Europe. As a result, graduates from the UCD programme will now be able to receive a license to practice veterinary medicine in the US or Canada without having to complete a special ‘foreign graduates’ exam.

We are currently seeking support for this exciting new project.

Dr. Joe Cassidy, through a long-standing collaboration with the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen, is part of a multi-disciplinary research team that has developed a novel vaccine that can protect against tuberculosis (tb) both before and after individuals have become infected. The research findings, published in Nature Medicine in January (Aagaard et al., 2011), indicate that the ‘multistage’ vaccine confers efficient protection before and after exposure in a mouse model of infection and could offer more long lasting protection in humans than that currently provided by BCG.

Jarlath Nally is a Lecturer in the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Sciences Centre at UCD. His research focuses on understanding pathogenic mechanisms of the zoonotic disease Leptospirosis (Weil's disease) during acute and chronic infection and in particular, the severe pulmonary form of leptospirosis.

Frederick A. Murphy-Honorary Degree of Doctor of ScienceFrederick A. Murphy-Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (19/07/2011)

Frederick A. Murphy is widely regarded as a pioneer in his field. He has dedicated his veterinarian career to the research of viral infectious diseases and its control globally. His most recognisable work includes the discovery of the Ebola virus in 1976. Professor Murphy also played a vital role in the discovery of the Arenavirdae and Bunyaviridae viruses (rodent viruses which can affect humans).

In recognition of his work and practice as both a veterinarian and humanitarian Dr. Frank O’Leary has been awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from University College Dublin. The honour coincided with the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the worlds first veterinarian school in 1761.
