Frederick A. Murphy-Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science

Frederick A. Murphy is widely regarded as a pioneer in his field. He has dedicated his veterinarian career to the research of viral infectious diseases and its control globally. His most recognisable work includes the discovery of the Ebola virus in 1976.  Professor Murphy also played a vital role in the discovery of the Arenavirdae and Bunyaviridae viruses (rodent viruses which can affect humans).

According to Professor Sean Callanan, UCD School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine, who gave the citation for his honorary Doctor of Science,  Professor Murphy’s work in the area of viral infectious diseases underpins much of the advances in our understanding of disease and of the concept that the world must embrace a “one-health” initiative.

Professor Murphy began his professional education in Cornell University. He subsequently joined the University of California at Davis where he obtained his PhD in Comparative Pathology, Emphasis in Immunology. Professor Murphy has sat as both member and director on a number of prominent scientific consulting committees in both the US and the UK including the National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Today Professor Murphy is a member of the department of Pathology in the University of Texas and he is a prominent figure in the One-Health initiative.
