UCD Veterinary Medicine has the only centre for veterinary education in Ireland, and enjoys a long and proud tradition. This leading veterinary school provides excellent facilities for the care of animals and training opportunities for veterinary medicine and nursing students.

UCD Veterinary Medicine is one of the leading veterinary schools in Europe, and it has also been granted full accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The AVMA educational standards of excellence are recognised worldwide as the 'gold standard' in veterinary education.

UCD Veterinary Medicine is located in a new purpose-designed Veterinary Sciences Centre and Veterinary Hospital on the main UCD campus at Belfield. The UCD Veterinary Hospital offers a range of high-quality veterinary services for both farm and companion animals and this caseload provides very important opportunities for our students to complete their clinical training requirements.

Our state-of-the-art facilities and position on the campus of a major research-intensive university allow us to push back the frontiers of knowledge in veterinary research, thus advancing animal health, animal welfare and human health. This research informs our educational programmes, ensuring that all of our students, whether studying to be veterinary nurses, veterinarians, veterinary specialists, or for advanced research degrees, receive a world-class education.

Accreditation

In March 2008 the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education voted to grant full accreditation to Veterinary Medicine at UCD for the maximum period of 7 years. UCD's Veterinary Medicine Programme is now one of only five veterinary schools currently accredited by the AVMA in Europe. As a result, graduates from the UCD programme will now be able to receive a license to practice veterinary medicine in the US or Canada without having to complete a special ‘foreign graduates’ exam.

NAVLE

The UCD School of Veterinary Medicine has full accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education.  Full accreditation was awarded in May 2007 and the next visitation will be in 7 years' time 2014.

NAVLE Pass Rates

The North American Veterinary Licensing Exam or NAVLE is a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in all licensing jurisdictions in North America. Senior students and recent graduates of AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges must pass the NAVLE in order to gain licensure. The NAVLE is comprised of 360 clinically relevant multiple-choice questions and is administered as a computer-based examination throughout North America and at certain overseas sites during a four week testing window in November-December, and a two week window in April. The AVMA Council on Education current required pass rate is 80%.
