Welcome Message
Welcome to the University Veterinary Hospital - a unique environment that prides itself on its specialty services, dedicated internationally recognised staff and modern equipment serving the needs of the veterinary profession and the animal owning public. Our primary mission is to advance veterinary science through excellence in clinical training at both under- and post-graduate levels. Closely associated with this is our commitment to provide exemplary care for our animal patients and to continually improve and develop new diagnostic tests and treatment programmes.
The UVH is the only veterinary teaching hospital on the island of Ireland and is integral to the success of the veterinary medicine programme. The UVH is composed of a small animal area with dedicated surgical suites and intensive care facilities and a large animal area with dedicated farm animal and equine facilities all of which are complemented by modern diagnostic imaging and laboratory equipment. We currently see approaching 6,000 animals per year and process over 12,000 diagnostic laboratory samples.
The UVH provides a primary and referral consultation resource to the public and veterinary profession. In achieving this aim we are open for consultations each weekday and provide 24-hour hospital care for all our patients. Our services are broadly categorised into small animal medicine and surgery, large animal surgery, a farm animal clinic and equine medicine. Within each area specific disciplines may be highlighted (soft tissue surgery, dermatology, endocrinology etc.). There are approximately 25 senior veterinary academic staff working within the clinical services, most of whom are recognised specialists within their field. Outside the clinics, there are approximately 10 senior academic staff involved in providing consultative services for diagnostic tests of all varieties from blood to CNS samples.
For most of the year, final veterinary students fulfil their clinical training requirements through rotation in the various disciplines within the UVH. The UVH is also dedicated to postgraduate specialty clinical training and is accredited for residency training in the following disciplines
- Clinical Reproduction
- Equine Medicine
- Small Animal Medicine
- Veterinary Surgery
- Diagnostic imaging
- Veterinary Pathology
- Herd Health
- Veterinary anaesthesia
- Veterinary Clinical Pathology
- Veterinary Parasitology
There are 19 Residents currently being trained, all of whom spend the majority of their time on clinical work. The UVH also employs 6 Interns within the small and large animal areas.
The UVH is also integral for the training of veterinary nurses. Several student veterinary nurses are employed as part of the large veterinary nursing team and the UVH provides facilities for core rotations for all veterinary nursing students studying for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
The UVH moved to its new purpose built premises in UCD in 2002 and since that time has strived to continually improve the facilities and equipment available. We are proud that so far our equipment and facilities are second to none and new additions include
- full range of video endoscopic equipment for large and small animals
- dedicated hydrotherapy facility for small animals
- dog donor clinic
- equine treadmill
- radioisotope scanning
- access to small animal MRI
We have an excellent reputation for quality and we strive to provide personal attention to all our clients. If you do not find the necessary information on these webpages, do not hesitate to contact the UVH directly.
