Facilities & Equipment

The UCDVH Equine Service has access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment:

  • Video endoscopy of the upper and lower airways, the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary tract – facilitates minimally invasive visualisation of surfaces in the body that are not visible from the outside, such as the stomach, bladder and the insides of the guttural pouches
  • A dedicated large animal diagnostic imaging suite - ultrasonography for the thorax and abdomen, radiography, ultrasonography and CT scanning for the head and neck
  • Telemetric cardiology - for 24 hour or exercise monitoring of the heart
  • Specialist stalls are available for mares and foals
  • Padded stalls with capacity for a sling – to aid management of  recumbent or ataxic horses
  • A Clinical Pathology Laboratory on site - results within hours on blood tests and cytologic samples
  • A Microbiology Laboratory on site – initial results within 24 hours on culture samples
  • Separate isolation facility  - for out-patient / in-patient - facilitates the management of animals with contagious diseases such as Equine Strangles or Salmonella to allow management and treatment without risk to other hospitalised horses
