In 2009 UCD’s Planning and Environmental Policy established an exchange programme with one of the US’s largest planning programmes in the Department of Urban Planning and Policy, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The exchange allows graduate students from each institution to progress towards their degrees while accumulating course credit at the exchange partner institution.

MEGAPOLITAN is an exchange program between Canada (Quebec City, Vancouver) and the EU (Dublin and Barcelona) which started in 2011 and which will expand until 2015. The Megapolitian exchange is for graduate students interested in comparative urban issues, particularly those centring on issues of the livability and sustainability of mega region.
