MSc World Heritage Conservation student wins the Mary Mulvihill Memorial Award
UCD Shool of Archaeology are delighted to congratulate Irene Fogarty, a student on the MSc World Heritage Conservation online course, for winning the Mary Mulvihill Memorial Award based on her piece on the contribution of indigenous women to science knowledge.
The Mary Mulvihill Memorial Award commemorates the late journalist’s distinct legacy to science broadcasting and writing, aiming to encourage early career writers and communicators. The inaugural year theme was women’s contribution to science: submissions could be in any media format and cover historical or contemporary subjects.
Irene says: “The World Heritage Conservation programme presents a great opportunity for participants to learn from both scientific and humanities-led perspectives. A key focal point of the course is indigenous peoples and local communities’ roles in natural & cultural conservation and management. This is an area of huge interest to me: in particular, the issue of indigenous women’s representation. I hoped an essay based on their science knowledge in the context of climate change would highlight an area of knowledge often overlooked in science journalism and offer a unique angle for the competition. It’s an honour to have won and I’m very grateful that the World Heritage Conservation programme gave me the knowledge tools to be able to enter.”
