Institutional History

Founded in 1955 as a branch of the International European Movement established in 1948, ICEM has performed the core function of promoting European integration as a non-governmental organisation; and played a major role in creating in Ireland an environment susceptible to the country joining an enlarged European Community in 1972. It conducted a futher significant education and information programme in advance of the first direct elections to the European Parliament in 1979. It routinely promotes study and research; organises meetings and conferences; and disseminates information and publicity material on the European project. It is now known as the European Movement Ireland.
