St. Patrick’s Celebrations 2014 @ BDIC
In March 2014, BDIC brought St. Patrick’s celebrations to the BJUT host campus in Beijing. St Patrick’s Day is an Irish national holiday and great way to introduce the Beijing-based students to Irish culture. The celebrations started off on the 17th of March with a midday parade around the BJUT campus organised by the BDIC/BJUT Irish Culture Club. On the evening of the 17th, BDIC hosted an Irish table quiz to test the students’ knowledge about all things Irish. The prize for the winning team was a hot whiskey-making instruction session with the BDIC Provost, Professor David FitzPatrick. UCD hosted the ‘You don’t have to be Irish to be Irish’ concert and party on the 18th. Live traditional Irish music was provided by Carlow band Cuisle who were touring in Beijing. Hearing quality, live Irish music in Beijing was a real treat. Two Irish movie nights were held on the 19th and the 25th of March. BDIC students were shown "Once" and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". The St. Patrick’s Celebrations were a great success and the students relished the opportunity to learn more about Irish culture and customs. St. Patrick’s celebrations will now become an annual event at BDIC.
