Inaugural Lecture

The Inaugural Lecture is the pinnacle of the social calendar for the Society, providing a platform for discussion, reminiscence and good fun. It welcomes the incoming of the new ChemSoc committee and celebrates the end of the undergraduate/teaching term. A high calibre speaker is invited by the Chemical Society to give a public lecture in their area of expertise.

This year the School of Chemistry Research Day incorporated the ChemSoc Inaugural Lecture and included information talks for incoming final year students and postgrads on areas such as funding and career opportunities, with external speakers from Dell, Intel, APC and BOC. A poster session showcasing the work of final year undergraduates and postdocs took place in the afternoon with Dr. Mark Barrett, CEO and co-founder of APC, presenting the prizes for the best posters.

Whilst the poster session was taking place the Chemical Society had the arduous task of taking Professor Christopher Dobson to Roly’s in Ballsbridge for lunch, it’s safe to say there was a full compliment of the committee in attendance! After the Undergraduate Awards, ChemSoc presented their year in review and introduced the distinguished inaugural speaker Professor Chris Dobson to give his lecture entitled “Alzheimer’s disease: Addressing a twenty first century plague”. The lecture was well received by all that attended and certainly provided plenty of food for thought with many academics, with students probing the expert knowledge of professor Dobson. Once the lecture concluded a reception was held in the atrium of the Science Centre where everyone enjoyed a glass of wine before heading to Kiely’s to continue the festivities and elsewhere later on into the night.
Pieta House.

In the early hours of the morning on the 12th of May, twelve members of the UCD Chemical society led by Orla Patton participated in the Darkness into Light event to raise vital funds for Pieta House. This event was a key event to the Society’s central theme of Mental Health awareness. The team raised of €600 for Pieta House. Everyone involved had good fun for a great cause.

Sports Day & ChemSoc BBQ

On the 14th of June the Chemical Society held its final event of the year; the Sports Day & BBQ. The Sports Day coordinated by Eoghan MacMahon and Vincent Duong, provide a welcome release for the members from the lab. Three legged races, egg and spoon races and cross bar challenges were but a few of the events held. Once the sports day concluded everyone headed to Dtwo for a well deserved BBQ and a couple of cold ones. It was a lovely way to finish up and conclude the Societies activities for the year.
