Dr. Abdollah Malekjafarian will be leading WindLEDeRR project

Monday, 21 February, 2022

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has announced that it has awarded a total funding of almost €20m to 49 projects supporting and enabling a wide range of energy research in Ireland. This includes the three-year WindLEDeRR project led by Dr. Abdollah Malekjafarian from UCD Civil Engineering, in partnership with Trinity College Dublin, National University of Ireland Galway, University College Cork, Munster Technological University and Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions with a total funding of €628,265.

As wind turbines are normally designed for a 20-year lifespan, there will be a significant number of onshore wind turbines reaching their end-of-life in Ireland in the coming years (estimated 500 turbines by 2025 and 1,000 by 2030). The WindLEDeRR project will develop a comprehensive decision-making tool for end-of-life wind turbines in Ireland, examining lifetime extension, anomaly detection, fatigue assessment, repurposing and sustainable decommissioning.
