Intel partners with UCD to sponsor Masters Students

Thursday, September 30, 2016 – Intel Ireland last night unveiled the first ever recipients of a new Masters Sponsorship programme for University College Dublin students. The new sponsorship programme is the latest initiative in an ongoing strategic partnership between Intel and UCD and follows on from the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the head of Intel’s Irish operations, Eamonn Sinnott, and UCD President, Professor Andrew Deeks earlier this year.
The sponsorship programme will see up to 16 UCD students selected each year each to receive a monetary grant as well as ongoing support and mentor provision by Intel. The eligible students are those beginning full time Masters programmes in Science and Engineering related disciplines.
The programme provides each participant with €3000 to support their academic studies and also ensures that students have the opportunity to experience practical learning which is aligned to the needs of industry. The provision of employee mentors by Intel provides students with a a direct relationship to the world of work.
Last night at a special event held in Dublin, the inaugural recipients were unveiled and formally presented with their sponsorships awards. The presentations on the evening were made by UCD President Professor Andrew Deeks and Intel Ireland General Manager Eamonn Sinnott who both underpinned the importance of investing in programmes such as this in order to ensure that Ireland continues to produce exceptionally talented graduates.

UCD President, Professor Andrew Deeks said:
"Our partnership with Intel is just one example of how UCD is joining with industry to prepare graduates who have the knowledge and skills to make significant contributions to Ireland’s future.
This programme shows what can be done when a dynamic university engages with a dynamic industry partner. For example, as part of the programme, each of these exceptional engineering and science Masters students will be assigned an Intel mentor, providing them with first-hand industry understanding and experience."
Intel Ireland General Manager Eamonn Sinnott said:
“Increasingly, the problems that we will face will require us to draw on multidisciplinary skills and it is the bright, creative and curious minds that will be responsible for the innovations of tomorrow and the technologies and discoveries that we have yet to imagine. This is the first programme of its kind that Intel has sponsored and we are excited to be partnering with UCD in order to make it happen”.

Intel has in place already an undergraduate scholarship award for Women in Technology and this new programme further expands the focus of Intel’s support for both 3rd and 4th level education.
UCD and Intel Memorandum of Understanding
The Memorandum of Understanding between UCD and Intel was signed in March 2016 in order to further connect the two organisations and to help fuel the innovation economy here in Ireland.
The partnership, which is the culmination of a longstanding relationship between UCD and Intel, focuses on three areas: talent, research, and national policy associated with research and education.
