PhD Topic Areas for Supervision

The School of Economics encourages PhD applicants in the following areas where staff have strong research expertise and interest. 

  • Applied Microeconomics topics such as contract theory, game theory, industrial organisation, and political contests.
  • Behavioural Economics topics including financial decision making, inter-temporal choice and behavioural public policy.
  • Health Economics topics such as economics of human development, impact of early childhood experiences on later life outcomes, the effectiveness of early intervention programs, mental health, health insurance, and health demand and utilisation.
  • Labour Economics topics such as affirmative action, economics of education, efficiency wages, labour markets in developing countries, migration, minimum wages, and search.
  • Public Economics topics including trends in corporate taxation, determinants of poverty, income inequality, and international taxation.
  • Regional and Urban Economics topics such as location analysis, spatial analysis, and transport economics.
  • Empirical Macroeconomics topics including growth and development, the interaction between the financial sector and the macro-economy and historical analysis.
  • International Economics topics including international trade and foreign direct investment.

The School will also consider applicants wishing to pursue other research areas, a suitable supervisor is not always available in these cases.
