Experiential Learning

Experiential learning or hands-on learning is a process through which students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting. As a college student, that can mean many different kinds of experiences. It can encompass internships, debates, service learning, practical’s, field trips, undergraduate research, study abroad, and other creative and professional work experiences. Outlined below is how study abroad students at UCD can get more active and engaged in learning outside of the traditional lecture format.

  • Lab Summer School

  • Engineering Research Module
During a study abroad semester, engineering majors will have the opportunity to carry out research in the School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering. Module (opens in a new window)MEEN30170 Introduction to Engineering Research will introduce students to the principles of engineering research through attachment to an active research group in the College of Engineering & Architecture. Students will become active members of a research group and work under the direction of the group’s Principal Investigator. Students will learn about the research focus of the group and conduct independent research into the scientific literature of relevance to the group’s activity.  Read here for some examples of research projects undertaken by UCD Engineering Study Abroad students.
  • Summer Research
The UCD College of Engineering & Architecture is offering Study Abroad Engineering Students the opportunity to extend an academic semester of study to include a research placement or internship during the summer. Whilst placements cannot be guaranteed, a dedicated Study Abroad Officer will work with the student from the outset to secure their summer placement as early as possible. Spring students can be accommodated in a 4 to 12-week unpaid placement on the basis that they will spend an academic semester of study at the UCD College of Engineering & Architecture (spring semester applicable only). Please visit our website here for information on our research themes and priorities.
