Making your garden pollinator friendly

Tops tips and advice from Dr Dara Stanley and Ger O'Connor (SAP Landscaping) and David McCormack (Estate Services)

  • Dara is an Assistant Professor in Applied Entomology in the School of Agriculture and Food Science and Earth Institute at UCD. She is an ecologist who leads a research team investigating the interactions between insects and plants, with a special interest in pollinating insects. Current projects are investigating the role of pollinators in crop production, the conservation of rare bumblebees, the effects of climate and pesticide use on pollination services, and the role of honeybees in sustainable livelihoods in Africa.
  • Ger is currently a Contracts Manager with SAP Landscapes Ltd. and has 30 year’s experience in landscaping industry, 21 with SAP. Ger is experienced in moving with the changing landscaping industry over this time and implementing new ideas and techniques. Currently assisting DLRCC in management of wildflower and pollinator friendly initiatives within the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown area. Keeping up to date with latest machinery to manage efficiently wildflower and pollinator friendly areas.

Legal advice for life - wills, enduring power of attorney

Valerie McAllister, Dillon Solicitors will discuss the importance of Wills, matters to consider when making a Will and she will also speak about the importance of having an Enduring Power of Attorney in place.

  • Valerie McAllister is a Senior Legal Executive with a National Certificate in Law, a Diploma in Law and  B.A. Degree in Law and Business. Valerie has experience in many areas of law to include immigration and naturalisation, conveyancing, wills and probate, family law, marine law, litigation and personal injuries.

  • Barry Cull - Head of 'Homes AIB' in Dublin South.
    Barry is responsible for leading AIB’s Homes strategy and managing the team across Dublin South to deliver the best mortgage customer experience in their community. Barry holds a B.Comm from NUI Galway as well as a QFA and Professional Banker accreditation from the Institute of Bankers.
  • John Fahey  - Senior Economist AIB
    John Fahey, has responsibility for the Irish economy as well as the major international economies and related interest rate and foreign exchange markets. Before joining AIB, John spent eight years at Ulster Bank, and previously worked in the Economics Department at NUI Galway, where he taught courses in economics. John holds a B.A and M.A in Economics from NUI Galway.
  • Phil Browne  - Financial Planning Specialist AIB  / Irish Life
    Phil Browne is an experienced Financial Planning Specialist. Phil provides advice on areas such as, Income Protection, Life and Illness Cover, Mortgage Protection, Investments and Pensions.

Managing lunchbox fatigue - healthy lunch options for adults

Bored with you daily lunchbox offerings? Craving that treat to spice up your lunch?

Come along and find out how to make your lunch interesting, appetising and healthy! Julie Dowsett, UCD School of Agriculture & Food will give some practical suggestions and ideas in this interactive workshop. Attendees will also receive a branded Healthy UCD lunchbox so that you can put the suggestions into practice!

  • Julie is a registered dietitian with 19 years experience working in St Vincent's University Hospital. She has worked in UCD since 2006 where runs a PhD Development Programme, upskilling researchers for a career in the agri food sector. She also works in Executive Education. Julie is a Fellow of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI), the professional body for dietitians in Ireland.

Fuss-free, healthy lunchboxes for kids

"Finding making the daily lunches a challenge? Come along to this workshop where Dr Sarah Brown will give some practical tips, advice and suggestions to thane the challenge out of making the school lunches. Attendees will also receive a branded Healthy UCD lunchbox.

  • Sarah is a registered dietitian with a background in community dietetics and youth health promotion.  Her research focuses on school and retail food environments and the dietary behaviours of children and teenagers. Sarah currently works as a part-time Assistant Professor in nutrition and dietetics at the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science and also holds a post-doctoral research position in childhood obesity at RCSI working with the W82GO programme at Children's Health Ireland, Temple Street.

  • Trevor Grant, Affinity Advisors, switching your mortgage to save money for renovating your home. Trevor Grant is a Director of Affinity Advisors, an award winning financial advisory firm specialising in the provision of market-based mortgage and protection advice.
  • Michael Pike, Architect, UCD School of Architecture & Planning, planning pitfalls and things to consider. Michael is principal of GKMP Architects and an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy. GKMP Architects are concerned with the design of housing and public space.
    Since inception the practice has received a number of architectural awards.

'House plants - what to get and how to look after them'

  • Hannah Mooney has worked with SAP Landscapes for the last 3 years. As Contracts supervisor in charge of the interior plant maintenance business, Hannah supervises installation and maintenance of interior plants. Hannah previously worked with Woodies as on-site horticulturist advising customers on indoor plants and planting. Hannah has a personal interest, not just commercial, in interior planting.

Greener Homes with the Susutainable Energy Authority of Ireland

Susan Andrews will be on site to talk to you about the latest grants and technology for your home.

  • Susan Andrews is Programme Executive with SEAI for the Home Energy grants programme, which offers financial incentives for energy efficiency in the residential sector. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Susan has an MSc in Strategic Management and BSc in Business and Marketing, along with eighteen years’ experience across a variety of sectors including Architecture, Engineering and Construction.
UCD Hospitality

Drop in and have a chat to us about the eating options on campus, sustainability initiatives we are undertaking and collect a free reusable lunchbox for use at our International Street Food Market every Thursday.

KSG catering

Environmental and sustainable restaurant practices are important to us and KSG Catering will be highlighting the recent green initiatives we have taken across our units on campus. On the day we will be:

  • Giving out free KSG branded water bottles
  • Giving out free Ecoffee Cups and highlighting the 10% discount available for using a reusable cup
  • Have some small bites from our Enrich healthy eating program
  • Have samples of our disposables and explain the steps customers can take to reduce their waste footprint when using our cafes
UCD Smarter Travel

Come and find out about active and sustainable commuting to UCD, recently upgraded bike parking areas, public repair stands, bike security and secure bike parking area, Dart Shuttle bus services, electric vehicle (EV) facilities. Bleeperbike will be with us on the day promoting their bike rental services and providing promo codes for a free days use of a bleeperbike. Drop down for some back up bike lights, high vis slap wraps and high vis snoods.

Travelhub will be on site on Tuesday, 7 November to answer any queries you have regarding these fantastic benefits schemes. They will also be joined by a representative from Dublin Bus and Belfield Bike Shop.

Sourcing furniture with UCD WARP IT

Got furniture in your office you don't want or looking for furniture? UCD Warp (Waste Action Reuse Portal) It is a web based, furniture reuse platform, part of the Green Campus initiative managed by UCD Estate Services to reduce our carbon footprint by diverting furniture from landfill, and reduce the costs to the University of storage and purchase of new furniture. UCD Warp It was launched in April 2019 and has an online catalogue of office furniture available to UCD staff and to charity/non- profit organisations in Ireland. Register online via UCD Warp It

Campus Developments

Find out more about our campus development plans. We will have on display details of Future Campus Phase 1 which consists of the Centre for Creativity, the Centre for Future Learning as well as landscaping and urban design upgrades. Also on display will be a model of the Student Residential Masterplan and initial plans for 3,000 new beds and a student amenity building.

UCD Green Campus

Come and find out how you can get involved. The Green Campus initiative is a programme run by An Taisce in third-level institutions. The aim of Green Campus is to encourage students and staff to work together to implement projects and initiatives that will raise awareness of environmental issues and improve the environmental performance of their institution. Additionally, by successfully following a 7-step programme, participating organisations will be awarded the An Taisce “Green Flag”. More information on the An Tasice Green Campus initiative and the 7-steps can be found here.

UCD Staff Photography Club

The Club aims to provide a relaxed and welcoming setting for staff to learn more about photography, share their photos and develop their skills. Membership is open to any staff member with an interest in photography, regardless of skill level. You won't need a 'fancy' camera and we'll try as much as possible to tailor monthly challenges to camerphone users as well as SLR owners. UCD Purl Jam is a craft group at University College Dublin that was established in September 2017 by Dr Niamh Nestor (Student Adviser in the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine) and Catriona Keane (Student Adviser in UCD Science). 2019/20 Programme Catalogue
The 2019/20 Programme Catalogue is designed to support all employees and teams in their professional development within UCD and reflect the UCD competencies, Faculty, Technical and Job Families Frameworks. The range of training courses enable staff to engage with programmes identified in their P4G development plan. Leadership and people management skills are developed through our dedicated programmes, supported by coaching and mentoring.

P4G
Performance for Growth (P4G) is the UCD framework that provides the opportunity for all employees to have at least one annual conversation with their line manager, Head of School or alternate reviewer, within which achievements and challenges of the previous year are reflected on and goals and objectives for the coming year agreed. From that conversation a development plan is decided on and career aspirations are explored and supported where possible.

Newly Appointed Assistant Professor Programme
Created specifically for the newly appointed Asst Professors, this programme’s objective is to support new faculty so that they feel more connected to UCD and to provide opportunities to develop cross-disciplinary relationships that will be useful and fruitful for their career and enjoyment of life at UCD.

Post-Doctoral researchers
UCD Research Skills & Career Development provides Post-doctoral Researchers with access to training and development opportunities across four core competency areas of Research and Research Management, Personal and Professional Excellence, Teaching Learning and Mentoring and Innovation and Transferable Skills.

Bespoke team events
UCD People & Organisation Development design and deliver customised solutions to help schools and units to work more effectively. This service is available through your HR Partner and the People and Organisation Development specialist. We collaborate with you on whatever your particular challenge might be, whether it is bringing your strategy to life so that it has meaning for everyone in your school or unit or whether it is helping you to respond to a major change impacting your area. Support can also be provided with customised workshops on team dynamics/teambuilding using a variety of tools to build on what is already working well and explore areas for change.

Leadership
A range of leadership programs and workshops have been introduced over the past few years at UCD, these programs, introduced by the People and Organisation Development unit, have been designed to support and develop leaders at all levels to help UCD build and strengthen its internal capability to fulfil the 2020 strategy goals and beyond.

Retirement Planning Council

The Retirement Planning Council will provide advice on how to approach retirement and expertise on the state pension and PRSI contributions.

Pensions Information

The UCD Pensions Team will be available to go through any pensionable service queries, discuss retirement plans or give you a better understanding of how your pension benefits work.

Cornmarket will guide you through the Additional Voluntary Contribution (AVC) option for augmenting your pension.

Innovation Academy

UCD Innovation Academy designs and delivers immersive workshops, modules and programmes that build the creative confidence and capacity for innovation among learners across industries and sectors. Upcoming programmes include:

  • UCD Professional Diploma in Creativity, Innovation and Leadership (Part-time) L9 NFQ (February 2020)
    This programme is designed to equip middle and senior managers with the leadership skills to drive innovation across their organisation. Participants will develop the mindset, skillset and an actionable toolkit to quickly apply what they have learned in class to make an impact.
  • UCD Professional Diploma for Entrepreneurial Educators (Part-time) L9 NFQ (June 2020)
    This course is offered free of charge to UCD Academic, Teaching or Training and Development staff. Participants will reflect on their teaching practice, explore new innovations in teaching from around the world and develop the leadership skills to effect change in their unit or institution.
  • Bespoke Innovation Workshops (1-2 Day)
    These short bespoke workshops can be designed to meet the needs of the school or unit and cover a range of topics in a playful and immersive way. Workshop topics include Design Thinking, Hackathons, Creative Collaboration, Barriers and Enablers of Innovation etc.
