Centenary Readings of James Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man': Friday, 6 May 2016

University College Dublin

in association with the

James Joyce Centre

In this year of centenary commemorations in Ireland, the UCD James Joyce Research Centre will mark the anniversary of the publication of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man with a conference that aims to provide a forum for the discussion of one hundred years of scholarship on Joyce’s pivotal novel. While we encourage lively debates about the many ways in which the book has been read, we particularly want to promote the presentation and discussion of new insights and perspectives on Joyce’s work. All topics and approaches are welcome. (The Dublin James Joyce Journal No. 9 for 2016 will be a special issue on A Portrait that will contain essays based on the conference presentations.)

Confirmed Keynote Speakers:

Frank Callanan, SC (Dublin)

Prof Gregory Castle (Arizona State University)

The venue will be the James Joyce Centre 35 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1: http://jamesjoyce.ie/. The social programme has yet to be fixed. Further information about the conference will be posted in January 2016 at www.ucd.ie/englishanddrama.

We are pleased to announce a Call for PANELS and PAPERS to complement the traditional keynote and plenary presentations. To gauge interest in the topic, we ask that you contact the organisers as soon as possible for further information. Please submit by email a paragraph-long paper and/or panel abstract (with title) that clearly sets out the topic, including a short abstract, which should not be longer than 500 words. Also include a brief narrative CV (for each speaker) with affiliation and a short statement about your current work on Joyce.

The registration fee is €15: this covers lunch and coffee/tea breaks. There will be a supplemental charge for the closing dinner. A wide range of accommodation is available online for all budgets.
