H. A.: Dev was after being arrested, you see, and his followers. And here they come marching down Mount Brown and up to Kilmainham, and a line of soldiers on one side, another line on the other side, and Dev marching in front along with the officer. Well now, I heard and read about him, with his military cap and things like that, his slouch hat. He’d no slouch hat, he’d no head covering at all, and he going through Kilmainham, after coming down Mount Brown. Because I was there on the kerb stone looking at him do you know?

C. Mac C.: Yeah.

H. A.: And I think the officer didn’t know whether I was saluting him or saluting him or saluting Dev [laughter]. But the followers of Dev, I don’t know… What would I say was in it, it might be twenty four, twenty five of them you know? And they were all lads, everyone all of them lads. There was one senior man in them, and he had a hard hat, and only for the hard hat I wouldn’t pick him out. He was the only man that had I think a head cover on him. And them lads… ah them lads now they were only round about fifteen and sixteen or seventeen years of age. Every…

C. Mac C.: They were all very young?

H. A.: All young. And now there was only the one man in them, and that was the man with the hat. And he’d be about thirty four…five or forty years of age. And that’s where I was when Dev was going to Kilmainham.
