UCD Geography Map Gallery launched as part of UCD Festival

Wednesday, 22 June, 2016

On Saturday 18 June, 2016, UCD hosted the Open Day and opened its doors to the public to attend various activities. Geography took part and the theme was on ''Maps''.There were four displays in the School: i) displaying rare and historical maps of Ireland; ii) displaying aerial photographs with stereoscopes to see depth in 3-dimensional; iii) mental mapping exercises for visitors to draw maps based on their own experiences and; iv) digital online mapping with a wall mounted 55 inch smart-board.

The event was well attended with close to 500 visitors passing through Geography. The major attractions were the historical maps and the interactive mapping as two opposing technologies to create maps. Photogrammetry and mental mapping also got a good attention and overall, it was a successful event for Geography.

Below are examples of rare historic Irish maps that were on display during the day.
