UCD Geographer leads winning bid for IGC2024

Friday, 9 September, 2016

The UCD School of Geography is delighted that our Deputy Head, Associate Professor Niamh Moore-Cherry, led the successful bid from Ireland to host the International Geographical Congress (IGC) 2024. The IGC is the largest international gathering of geographers in the world. It takes place every four years and has been referred to as “the Olympics of Geography”. As well as academic paper sessions, the congress includes a range of other activities including keynote plenaries on topics of major international importance, workshops for early-career researchers, field excursions in the host country and the Geography Olympiad for high-school students. The Congress is expected to attract approximately 3,000 delegates when Ireland hosts this global event.

Working with colleagues, institutions and agencies from across the island and beyond, "Team Ireland" made a series of presentations to the IGU Executive Committee and to the General Assembly meetings held in Beijing, China during the IGC 2016 (21-26 August 2016). Following a vote by the General Assembly, made up of national contact points from member countries, Dublin emerged the decisive winner. The Irish Embassy in Beijing were extremely supportive and hosted a “Taste of Ireland” reception for our international supporters during the event.

UCD School of Geography looks forward to working with the Geographical Society of Ireland and the International Geographical Union to showcase our work and help promote the important research and educational activities going on within our community.
