Two successful IRC COALESCE awards for UCD School of Geography

Today, 26th March 2019, the Irish Research Council announced and launched the 26 projects funded under the 2018 COALESCE research call. This new funding scheme seeks to fund excellent research addressing national and European/global national challenges as set out in the challenge frameworks now in place. The call is run in partnership with a number of government department and agencies, who fund or co-fund specific strands. Two of the proejcts successfully awarded funding are based in the UCD School of Geography.

 
“Irish droughts: Environmental and and Cultural Memories of a Neglected hazard” is led by Dr Arlene Crampsie (UCD) and Dr Conor Murphy (MU), with collaborators from TCD. The project seeks to examine the historic Irish climate record and contribute to understandings of how past climate can enhance our future climate adaptation strategies.
 
“Ireland in the Metropolitan Century” is led by Assoc. Prof. Niamh Moore-Cherry (UCD) in collaboration with Prof John Tomaney at the Bartlett School of Planning (UCL). The regional assemblies in Ireland and OECD are policy partners on this project which focuses on how metropolitan governance in Ireland can be strengthened to ensure the national strategic outcomes identified in the National Planning Fraemwork can be realised.
 
Both projects begin officially on 1stApril 2019 and will support post-doctoral appointments.
