The School of Geography incorporates both physical and human components and key areas of interest for PhD supervision include:

  • Flooding, Rivers, Water security, Palaeoclimate Reconstruction.
  • Healthcare reform, including long-term care (nursing homes, home care), hospitals and primary care
  • Environmental assessment and change; Environmental planning; Resilient communities (re climate change); Participatory decision-making and other relevant topics that have a strong spatial analysis component
  • Brexit, Borders, Geopolitics; New Diplomacies; Emotions and State practices; Empire 1.0; 2.0; 0+: South Africa and the UK Post Brexit
  • Air quality; Thermal comfort; Climate-resilient cities; Nature-based solutions; Remote sensing & GIS
  • Latin America, social movements and critical development; Critical and radical geographies, anarchism; Critical and subaltern geopolitics; History and philosophy of geography
  • River science, Catchment management, Hydromorphology, Bedload and Suspended sediment, Flood and Palaeoenvironmental reconstruction (including micro-XRF core scanning applications)
  • Sexualities and gendered geographies; heteroactivism; queer geographies; trans geographies; feminist geographies
  • Urban Governance - formal and informal; Metropolitan, local and regional development; Sustainable urban environments; European regeneration / urban policy
  • Livelihoods, coping and resilience in Southeast Asia; food geographies (food waste and food security); ethnography
  • Environmental historical geographies; Irish historical geographies; sports geographies

We welcome expressions of interest from potential applicants interested in pursuing PhD research in the areas listed above. Applicants will be educated to Masters level, or equivalent.
