Professor of Linguistics, School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics
“The first thing that struck me about UCD was that compared to its European counterparts it was very accommodating to the needs of families. With very few exceptions, university activities, for instance, take place during regular working hours and flexible working arrangements have never been an issue. Since that time a host of other measures have come on stream to enhance employees’ work-life balance. UCD also provides a very inclusive and safe environment for employees and students: I have never found that decisions about someone’s professional advancement or their participation were influenced by a their life style, life choice, views, interests or their origin.
As an academic, I value the freedom that I have to pursue my research interests, collaborations and outreach activities even if they take place in faraway places, and to develop my leadership potential. The various teaching and learning initiatives available at UCD have been very helpful to enhance the synergies between my research and teaching activities and to keep up-to-date with current approaches to teaching and supervision in an easy way. The increasingly international environment coupled with the existing collegial, friendly and caring atmosphere and the lush campus make UCD an enjoyable place to work at that also offers a range of opportunities to get engaged in ranging from sports, music, academic societies to philanthropic activities and to meet an exciting mix of people from all around the world.”
