The research group currently has 1 Post-Doctoral Staff and 8 PhD students. They have secured over 3 million euro’s in competitive research from sources including the European Commission, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, the Carbon Trust and others.

They work closely with industrial partners including Mainstream Renewable Power, Bauer Maschinen, Irish Rail, Croatian Rail and Slovenian Railways. They were recently appointed (together with the University of Oxford and Imperial College) to develop a new design method for foundations used in the offshore wind sector in a project led by DONG Energy and sponsored by the UK Carbon Trust and a number of offshore wind developers. Ken is the coordinator of the EU FP7 project SMARTRAIL. The project with 15 European Partners aims to provide modern monitoring, assessment and remediation strategies to allow infrastructure managers to maximise the use of resources in protecting rail infrastructure against the effects of climate change.
