Panhellenism and Greek Identity in Isocrates

My thesis’ title is ‘Panhellenism and Greek identity in Isocrates’, with expectation to explain how Isocrates modified and constructed the ethnic criteria that distinguish the Greek and non-Greek in his speeches and to illuminate how he proceeds to fashion and authorize his own political plan under these criteria. It seeks to examine Isocrates’ perception of Greek identity within his panhellenic ideal. It is mainly concerned with ‘communal identity’, memory and forgetting, the leadership of Greece and the war against barbarian. It will examine how Isocrates modified and constructed criteria of Greek identity in his discourses, within which he proceeds to fashion and authorize his own political plan.
