Institutionalising Modern Consumption: Market Buildings and Department Stores in Chinese Cities, 1930s-1950s

Zhengfeng’s PhD dissertation explores how the commercial building types that facilitated urban prosperity in the capitalist West modernised Chinese everyday life from the Republican Era to the Communist regime. The research includes case studies on four architectural projects in interwar Shanghai, British colonial Hong Kong, and socialist Beijing. It demonstrates that the trade infrastructure embedded in multi-layered social networks not only housed the exchange of commodities but also participated in managing social changes associated with modernisation.
