1994 HOUSEHOLD BUDGET SURVEY Specification of Household Reformatted Computer Tape October 1996 _________________________________________________________________________________ CENTRAL STATISTICS OFFICE Ardee Road, Dublin 6 - phone 4977144 _________________________________________________________________________________ Contents Part 1 Introduction Part 2 Header Specification Part 3 Trailer Specification PART 1 INTRODUCTION 1. A largescale national Household Budget Survey was conducted between May 1994 and July 1995. A total of 7,877 sample households co-operated. An innovative feature of the survey was the incorporation into the sample of farm households co-operating in the National Farm Survey conducted by Teagasc (formerly An Foras Taluntas). This complicated the reweighting arrangement to allow for the sample design and differential response. 2. All details keyed from completed household returns are held on a master tape. Household tables are produced from a specially reformatted file. Four different reweighting factors are distinguished on this reformatted household tape, namely Factor A 1st stage proportional adjustment (farm households) Factor B 2nd stage proportional adjustment (representation of primary farm households, secondary farm households and other households in rural areas) Factor P Product of Factor A and Factor B Gross FCTR 3rd stage grossing factor (incorporating the traditional HBS adjustment for differential response) All average household values X are derived as b GF.X ______ bGF where GF = GROSS FCTR x Factor A x Factor B 3. Two types of variables are distinguished on the reformatted household tape namely Headers and Trailers as specified in Parts 2 and 3, respectively. 4. There are 471 Headers (i.e. VAR 1 - 456, 116A, 222A, 222B, 228A, 228B, 233A, 233B, 244A, 244B, 370A, 389A, 416A, 431A, 439A and Life-Cycle). These are comprised of two types, namely control variables (i.e. which contain classifying codes) and observation variables (i.e. which contain quantative information). Many of the Headers are defined in terms of the basic codes used on the HBS questionnaires where: REC 1 = First page of household questionnaire (HB.1) REC 2 = Remainder of HB.1 REC 3 = Personal questionnaire (HB.3) REC 4 = Expenditure diaries 5. There are 917 Trailer variables containing quantative values (e.g, average weekly expenditure, income and quantities consumed, etc.).
