Staff Virtual Private Network (VPN)
The University VPN provides University staff with a secure way to connect their work devices to the University network in order to access University systems when off campus.
Access to the Staff VPN can be requested by completing the VPN request form.
Please read Remote Access Procedure before remotely accessing University applications or IT services.
This is a staff service only. Student applications will be not be processed.
Supported Operating Systems
Cisco AnyConnect is the client used for VPN access. This is available for the following operating systems:
- Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.
- Mac 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, 10.13 and 10.14.
- ios 6.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
- Android 4.X to 7.X.
Note: The VPN client has been tested on Linux, but IT Services does not support Linux clients in general so we cannot assist with installation or support issues.
- Make sure your UCD Connect password is strong and secure.
- Apply the latest operating system and application updates immediately. Check that your Anti-Virus is up to date and running.
- Remember, only sites with HTTPS are secure.
Please note: You must first request access to use the VPN Service.

The Cisco AnyConnect VPN software and setup instructions are available from UCD Connect via Software Download. To access login using your UCD Connect username and password from www.ucd.ie/connect.

When should I use the University VPN? Most of the University IT systems are designed to be securely available outside of the University network. The VPN is only required to access University systems that are not available outside of the campus network or when accessing confidential University information on a business trip from an untrusted network such as a public Wi-Fi hotspot, hotel Wi-Fi, conference centre Wi-Fi, etc.
Who can access the VPN? The VPN is only available to University staff on request.
How can I request access? Staff can request access by completing the access request form. The form will prompt you to login through UCD Connect.
How do I connect to the VPN? Once you receive confirmation from IT Services that your access has been setup, you will need to download the VPN client software and setup instructions from Software Downloads, available on UCD Connect.
How do I login? When connecting to the VPN, choose the Staff profile from the VPN drop down list and login using your UCD Connect credentials.
Can I save my password to the VPN client? For security reasons, the software does not allow you to save your credentials into the client or app.
The VPN is not working, what do I do?
Please try the following:
- Check that your UCD Connect credentials are correct.
- Have you changed your password recently?
- After initial login or if you have forgotten to disconnect the VPN it may stall or hang. We suggest that you restart your device and try again.

I don't have access to Software Download. How do I get the Cisco AnyConnect software and setup instructions for my PC?
If you do not have access to Software Download, you ask your Sponsor or a staff member to download it for you.
