Covid-19 IT Security alert - beware of scams

IT Services are aware of several scams purported to be offering advice on the COVID-19 pandemic or encouraging people to engage with supposed government agencies in the collection of data. These scams are using a variety of methods such as phishing, malware distribution, direction to specifically registered domain names containing wording related to Covid-19 themes and attacks on remote access infrastructure.

Cyber criminals are often masquerading as official or trusted agencies. Text messages, emails or websites containing Covid-19 related phrases are using methods such as inviting you to ‘click here’ or ‘download an app’.

IT Services encourages individuals to remain vigilant and take the following precautions:

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails and be wary of email attachments. See our Phishing information webpage. 
  • Use trusted sources—such as legitimate, government websites.

  • Do not reveal personal or financial information in email, and do not respond to email solicitations for this information.
  • Verify a charity’s authenticity before making donations.
