Using SMS or Callback MFA options? Now is the time to move to an easier and more secure method

Monday, 10 July, 2023

Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) was introduced to staff accounts in UCD in 2021 and has greatly enhanced staff account security by helping the University meet recommended security requirements. UCD currently offers a number of second factor methods to staff including the Duo Mobile App, a hardware token, SMS message and callback.

Unfortunately, SMS and Callback options incur significant costs to the University and also do not offer the same level of security as other methods. For these reasons, the decision has been made to remove SMS and Callback as second factor options for staff by September 2023. IT Services will be in direct contact with all staff using either SMS or Callback shortly.

IT Services recommends staff use the Duo Mobile App which is both free and more secure, helping the University to reduce costs and allows IT Services to invest more resources securing the University network.
