Information on Applying for a Research VPN Account

The Research VPN Service has been initiated as a temporary measure due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. It is designed to allow researchers who are engaged in active research on behalf of College to use the UCD Research VPN in order to gain access to internal UCD systems. This service is suitable for researchers who do not have access to a Staff account and are therefore unable to use the Staff VPN.

Undergraduates and Taught Masters students are not eligible to apply for this service, this service is currently available to Research Students only.

Before availing of this service you will need to do the following:

  • ensure that your Principal Investigator or Research Supervisor is aware of your request and has given written permission to ResearchIT prior to your application
  • review the UCD Remote Access Procedure and complete the Research VPN form (Undergraduate and Taught Masters students are not eligible for this service).

How do I connect to the VPN?

Once you receive confirmation from IT Services that your access has been setup, you can access the necessary software for the Research VPN here or alternatively by requesting the VPN client software from ResearchIT

Cisco AnyConnect is the software used for VPN access.  This is available for the following operating systems:

  • Windows 10.
  • Mac 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, 10.13 and 10.14.

How do I login?

When connecting to the VPN, choose the Research profile from the VPN drop down list and login using your UCD Connect credentials.


Can I save my password to the VPN client?

For security reasons, the software does not allow you to save your credentials into the client or app.


The VPN is not working, what do I do?

Please try the following:

Check that your UCD Connect credentials are correct.


Have you changed your password recently?

After initial login or if you have forgotten to disconnect the VPN it may stall or hang. We suggest that you restart your device and try again.
