JOHN HUME VISITING RESEARCH FELLOW - ARCHIVE - PROF ROBERT SCHMUHL

The visiting Research Fellow for session 2008/09 is Professor Robert Schmuhl Walter H Annenberg-Edmund P Joyce Professor of American Studies and Journalism at the University of Notre Dame.

Professor Schmuhl is working on a volume, provisionally entitled Easter 1916 and America: The Irish Rebellion and the “Exiled Children”. This study will:

  • Examine the background to Irish-America’s concern with Irish independence;
  • Examine the reporting of and reaction to events as they unfolded;
  • Examine the impact of events after the Easter Rising;
  • Address the long term consequences of 1916 for Irish US involvement.

During his stay at UCD Professor Schmuhl will make extensive use of key archival material available in the university and in other Dublin repositories. He will also engage with a core group of scholars concerned with the history of the Rising, Irish independence and the formation of the Irish State led by Professor Mary Daly.

Professor Schmuhl will also be :

  • Contributing to the Institute post graduate seminar programme;
  • Participating in a research scoping exercise for a project provisionally entitled Through a Looking Glass: Conflicting and Complementary Representations of Ireland and America in mass and new media;
  • Contributing to the Hume Institute public lecture programme.
