Denis Bracken is Professor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba where he has taught criminal justice social work since 1979.  He obtained post-graduate degrees from the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics and Political Science.  He has held a variety of administrative positions in the Faculty and the University, including director of the Inner City Social Work Program, Rector of St. Paul’s College and most recently Associate Dean for Undergraduate and Distance Education in the Faculty.  In 2011-12 he was a member of a 3 person Committee appointed to advise the Manitoba Minister of Justice on overcrowding in the provincial prison system.  His research interests include desistance from crime, Indigenous and ethnic minority persons’ experiences with the criminal justice system, and the training of probation officers in a milieu that emphasizes the assessment of risk as a primary tool in offender management.
